Quick Tips For Capturing, Evolving and Battling

Berry

A Berry is a type of Item in Pokémon Go that can be collected and stored in a player's inventory. Berries can be used on wild Pokémon to make them easier to capture.

Importance of Berries
There are Pokémon that are easy to capture (Green Circle), but then there are those that may be difficult or very difficult to capture (Orange/Red Circle). If you come across a difficult capture (especially one you have not caught before) you will want to try and catch it immediately. Leveling Up your Trainer will ultimately make Pokémon easier to catch, but this is more of a long-term solution.

Instead you can opt to use a more powerful Pokéball. However, many players choose to save their higher tier Pokéballs for extremely Rare Pokemon, as they are not all that easy to obtain. Alternatively, you can use Berries. Lower tiered Berries, are relatively easy to come by and will turn medium difficulty captures into relatively easy captures. Once the difficulty is reduced, a Great Ball or even a standard Pokeball may be enough to capture the Pokemon.

Where Can Berries Be Found?
The best way to find Berries is by visiting Pokéstops. The item drops at Pokéstops are randomly generated. Therefore, if you haven't found any Berries in your first few visits, continue visiting Pokéstops and they will drop eventually.

When Can You Use Berries?
A Berry can be used once during a Pokémon encounter. The game does not allow the use of multiple Berries per encounter. This mechanic mainly serves to prevent players from turning very difficult captures into very easy captures (negating the need for higher tiered Pokéballs).

How Can Berries Be Used?
When you encounter a wild Pokémon you can pull up your inventory. When accessing your inventory you can either switch between different types of Pokéballs or use a Berry. Simply click on the Berry you would like to use and then feed it to the wild Pokemon. If done correctly you should see a slight color change in the circle around the Pokémon.

Tips for Using Berries
- Easier captures statistically require less Pokeballs, therefore use Berries to limit the number of Pokéballs used per capture.

5 Best Ways to Level Up Fast

Leveling up your Trainer is the best and fastest way to progress quickly through Pokemon Go. As your Trainer reaches higher levels, he or she will be able to capture much more powerful Pokemon. In order to Level up fast you will want to gain the greatest amount of XP (experience points) in the shortest amount of time.

The key to leveling up quickly in most MMOs is to simply focus on actions which award the most XP per hour and avoid actions that reward little to no XP.  Leveling up in Pokemon Go is no different.

Need some help gaining XP? Check out the Pokemon Go Leveling Guide!

How to Level Up Fast
There are many different ways to gain XP in Pokemon Go. Some in-game actions and achievements award you with minimal XP, while others will grant you a high amount of XP. Here are the five best ways to gain experience points and Level up quickly.

Trainer XP Pokemon Go
#1. Capture Pokemon
Well this is a pretty obvious one, especially due to the fact that "Gotta Catch Em' All" is the Pokemon franchise slogan. However, capturing Pokemon is one of the best and most efficient ways to gain XP. You will gain experience points for skillfully throwing Pokeballs (Eg. Nice throw, great throw, excellent throw) and capturing wild Pokemon.

Not only will you gain a set amount of XP for capturing Pokemon, if the Pokemon is new you will get an added XP bonus! Even better, this added bonus is substantially more than the standard XP award you get normally. Capturing new Pokemon is most effective for lower level players, as the XP requirement for each Level up is much less in the early stages of the game.

Capture Magnemite Pokemon Go

#2. Hatch Those Eggs!
Carry around those Eggs you find at Pokestops, walk a total distance of about one Kilometer (0.621 miles) and your Egg will hatch into a Pokemon. You will gain XP for hatching the Pokemon, regardless of the species and if the Pokemon happens to be new you will gain the added XP bonus for obtaining the new Pokemon!

Egg Hatching Pokemon Go

#3. Evolve Pokemon
Capturing Pokemon will award you with Candy. Each species of Pokemon needs a specific amount of Candy before it can be evolved.

Acquiring Candy for Evolution can take some time, therefore the XP reward is much greater than that of a standard capture. Make sure to try and evolve as many Pokemon as you can. You will not only strengthen your Pokemon team, you will also be rewarded with a great deal of XP.

Squirtle Evolution
#4. Train & Battle at Gyms
Now Gyms are not as easy to find as Pokestops, but when found are great areas for gaining XP. Do your best to find friendly Gyms, especially if you are a newer Pokemon Go player. Friendly Gyms allow you to train your Pokemon without having to deal with the (usually more powerful) opposing Teams' Pokemon. Your Trainer will gain XP for each defeated Pokemon.

If you stumble across a Gym controlled by another Team, you can still battle, but winning these battles is oftentimes more challenging. Check the Gym first to see which defending Pokemon you are up against. If you have the CP and/or Pokemon Type advantage go ahead and initiate the battle. You will gain XP for each Pokemon that you defeat!

Pokemon Go Gym Battle

#5. Visit Pokestops
As you travel you will find a variety of Pokestops to visit. These locations will give you Pokeballs, Revives, Eggs, etc. Most importantly, visiting Pokestops will give you some XP. It should be noted that you will not get tons of XP from Pokestops. However, you can visit a lot of these in a short period of time and the XP really does add up, especially for beginners with lower Trainer levels.

Pokemon Go Pokestop

If you are looking to Level Up quickly, the best way is to gain XP as efficiently as possible. Make sure to minimize idle time, including looking at your Pokedex, checking your Inventory, customizing your Trainer, etc. In other words, if an action won't award any XP, try to best to avoid it.

#6. BONUS TIP (Gain 1,000XP per minute!):
Collect as many Pidgeys, Caterpies and Weedles as you can. Next make sure you have a Lucky Egg (With doubles XP for a short period of time), which you will get as a Level Up reward after reaching Level 9. You can also purchase a Lucky Egg from the Shop for Pokecoins.

See the video below for a good explanation of how to gain 30,000XP in 30 minutes:

The reason you want to focus on capturing these three Pokemon is that they are easy to find/capture and only require 12 Candy each to Evolve. Once you have collected enough Candy for each of these Pokemon (try to get at least 15 evolutions worth) you are ready to Evolve them.

Use the Lucky Egg and immediately begin evolving those Pidgeys, Caterpies and Weedles. You will gain a lot of XP for the evolutions plus that XP will be doubled because you are using the Lucky Egg buff!

Not sure how many Pokémon or Candy you need to maximize the use of your Lucky Egg timer?

Check out this great evolution calculator created by Zach Cowell:

You can find this calculator at http://www.pokelevel.com.

It is common to jump 2-3 Trainer Levels just by using this trick once.

Another very popular tool to maximize the use of your Lucky Egg is the Pidgey Calc!

The Pidgey Calc will calculate the Time Spent evolving x number of Pokemon, the total XP gained, and how many Lucky Eggs you should use to evolve those Pokemon.

Generally players will evolve Caterpies, Pidgeys and Weedles, but the calculator allows you to add the quantity/Candy of any Pokemon.

Go to Pidgeycalc.com to use this useful tool. You may switch between English, French, German or Japanese languages.

Capture New Pokemon, Hatch Eggs, Evolve Pokemon, Train & Battle and Visit Pokestops. If you follow these simple steps you will level up very quickly.

Pokemon Go Beta HD Gameplay (Australia)

Pokemon Go is currently being Beta tested by players in Australia and New Zealand. One player has a recorded a nine minute long gameplay video and the game really looks great. Just in case the video gets taken down, here is the video breakdown:

0:23 - 0:34 - Loading Screen and then the player chooses between a Male or Female Trainer

0:35 - 1:15 - Player customizes his Trainer (Skin Color, Hat, Eyes, Shirt, Pants, Shoes, Backpack and Name)

1:16 - 1:25 - Trainer Profile and Achievements are viewed. The visible achievements are Distance Walked, Pokedex, Captures, Evolutions, Eggs Hatched, Encounters and Pokestop Visits.

1:39 - Each player starts off with 20 Pokeballs. Pokeball - A device for capturing wild Pokemon. It's thrown like a ball at a Pokemon comfortably encapsulating its target.

1:47 - Player travels to a Gym. Gym - To control a Gym, you must pit your skills and your Pokemon in battle against others. Three teams compete for control of Gyms. You must choose to join one of the teams before you can battle.

2:04 - Player chooses Team Blue and a Geodude (CP 87) appears as one of his Pokemon.

2:24 - Player travels to a Pokestop (Giant Rock Stack) and collects three free Pokeballs and an Egg. Player also gains 50 XP.

2:50 - Wild Porygon (CP 85) is caught. Notice it has an orange circle around it, signifying that it is a relatively difficult capture. Pokemon with green circles around them are easy to capture. Player receives 100 XP for Pokemon Caught and 500 XP for New Pokemon.

3:14 - Porygon is shown as a Normal Type Pokemon, with Quick Attack and Thunderbolt as its two moves.

3:25 - Player reaches Level 2 and is awarded with five Great Balls. Great Ball - A good, high-performance Poke Ball that provides a higher Pokemon catch rate than a standard Poke Ball can.

3:55 - Vulpix (CP 55) is caught and shown as a Fire Type.

4:25 -  Magnemite (CP 75) is caught and shown as an Electric/Steel Type.

4:55 - Another Pokestop (Library) is visited and a Pokeball, a Great Ball and a Max Revive are obtained. Max Revive - A medicine that can revive fainted Pokemon. It also fully restores a fainted Pokemon's maximum HP.

5:15 - Player Trains his Magnemite by battling against his own Geodude at a friendly Blue Gym.

6:10 - Wild Meowth is encountered and captured.  Player earned a Medal for capturing his fifth Pokemon. Note: Capture mode can be toggled to either use the camera or use a virtual background instead.

6:28 - A third Pokestop is visited and two Pokeballs and a Great Ball are obtained. 50XP is gained and the player levels up to Trainer Level 3. He is rewarded with five Ultra Balls. Ultra Ball - An ultra-high performance Poke Ball that provides a higher catch success rate than a Great Ball.

6:50 - A fourth Pokestop is visited and 1x Pokeball, 1x Great Ball, 1x Ultra Ball and an Egg are obtained. 50XP is gained.

7:00 - After traveling one total KM in seven minutes of game time, an Egg hatches into a Poliwag (CP 49) 700 XP is gained. Poliwag is a Water Type.

7:55 - Wild Eevee (CP 56) is caught. Player receives 100 XP for Pokemon Caught and 500 XP for New Pokemon.

8:08 - Another Egg hatches from the player's inventory and its a Pikachu (CP 65)! The Pikachu is an Electric Type.

8:28 - Inventory shows 38 out of 1000 slots being used.

9:00 - A Wild Ekans (CP 60) is captured.

While this is still Closed Beta and many things may still change, it is very interesting to see that this player was able to capture so many different species of Pokemon is such a short amount of time. In addition, the gameplay was fast paced.  At least every thirty seconds there was either a Pokemon encounter, a Pokestop to visit or a Gym to battle at.

This is the best HD gameplay video I have seen so far and it really looks amazing. The Gym battle system looks fun, actually preferable to the original turn based battle system of other Pokemon games. With "Super Effective" and "Not Very Effective" popping up after each attack, Types will very much a part of the battling system and strategy in Pokemon Go.

Like many others, I originally thought being unable to battle wild Pokemon was a huge letdown. However, after seeing how this fast paced capture system works, I can definitely see why Niantic did not include Pokemon battles prior to capture. It would slow down the game tremendously, which would really inhibit players from "Catching Em' All". I honestly love all of the systems currently in place at the moment and can't wait until the Beta reaches the U.S.

What are your thoughts on the gameplay so far? Feel free to comment below.

Closed Beta (Part 1)

Pokemon Go Closed Beta Information
The following information was taken from the closed beta field testing of Pokemon Go. If you are new to Pokemon Go be sure to check out the Ultimate Pokemon Go Beginner's Guide!

What is a Closed Beta?
Beta refers to a phase within a software development’s schedule where users test software for bugs, crashes and/or data loss. There are two types of Betas, Open and Closed. The difference between the two is that Open Beta tests are normally released to the public, while Closed Beta Tests are limited or restricted to a select number of invited participants.

Pokemon Go Closed Beta Registration
Pokemon Go creators limited the first Closed Beta Testing to Japan in March 2016 and expanded the Beta Testing to Australia and New Zealand on April 7th. The participation requirements for the first Beta Test were as follows:

- Beta participants must live in Japan, new Zealand or Australia.

- Mobile Requirements: Android v4.3 or later/iOS for iPhone 5 or later. Check to see if you meet the Phone Requirements for Pokemon Go.

- Pokemon Go will require either a Wi-Fi connection or a Mobile Data Plan. If you intend to play Pokemon Go make sure to check out the best ways to reduce data usage.

- Google account required.

- Many signed up for a chance to participate in the Beta, but only a small percentage were given access.

- Compared to the Android version, the iOS version had very limited participation slots.

- Winning participants were notified with an Official E-mail containing the Pokemon Go Beta agreement.

- Testers were not given any type of compensation for participating in the Beta.

- Game Data from the Beta test will be erased and therefore will not carry over to the final release. Pokemon Go expected to release sometime in 2016, but there is still some speculation that it will be delayed to 2017.

- Transferring, selling, or lending accounts to others is strictly forbidden.

- Any Testers found leaking Beta gameplay, or information such as images or videos will have their accounts banned.

- Each account has an “almost” invisible watermark that allows Niantic to track down leakers.

Note: Be sure to check out the Beta Gameplay Videos.

Pokemon General Overview
It has been confirmed from the Beta Testing that all 151 Pokemon from Generation One (Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow) will be in Pokemon Go. In addition, all eighteen Pokemon Types will be available in the game.

These types include Grass, Fire, Water, Poison, Bug, Dragon, Ice, Fighting, Flying, Ghost, Ground, Electric, Normal, Psychic, Rock, Dark, Steel and Fairy. In addition to different Types of Pokemon, each Pokemon will have one of three Rarities and one of seven Natures.

Rarity Classes
There will be three different rarity classifications of Pokemon.

Normal Pokemon - will include all common types of Pokemon such as Caterpie, Magikarp, Rattata, etc. These will be the easiest Types of Pokemon to find, but will likely be the weakest in battle.

Legendary Pokemon - will include all uncommon types of Pokemon such as evolved forms of certain Pokemon. Legendary Pokemon will be relatively difficult to find in the wild, but will generally be more powerful than Normal Pokemon.

Mythic Pokemon - will include the rarest Pokemon such as Mew and Mewtwo. These Pokemon will be very difficult to find and capture, but will be much more powerful than Normal and Legendary Pokemon.

Natures
Each Pokemon will have one of seven Natures, which include Stoic, Guardian, Assassin, Raider, Protector, Sentry, and Champion. Although not many details have been confirmed about Natures, the following possibilities have been suggested:

- Pokemon will get stat boosts dependent on their Nature. For example, Pokemon with the Guardian Nature may get Defense boosts in battle, while Pokemon with the Assassin Nature may get Attack boosts in battle.

- Other suggestions include Stat boosts to Pokemon when they Train in Gyms.

- Natures will add an element of uniqueness to individual Pokemon.

Moves & Battle Mechanics
- In Pokemon Go, each Pokemon will have two different moves available to use.

- Each Pokemon will have one quick attack and one “charge” attack.

- There were a total of 232 moves (95 quick moves) found by Beta Testers.

-  Some moves are upgraded or replaced at different trainer levels.

Other Battle Mechanics included in Pokemon Go suggest a deeper and more advanced battle system. The following battle mechanics were found:

Type: The Type of Pokemon will affect the damage done and received (Eg. Water vs. Fire)

Heal: Pokemon can have their Health restored possibly either by Moves or Potions.

Accuracy Chance: Not all moves have 100% accuracy.

Critical Chance: Some moves have a chance to do extra damage.

Stamina Loss: Stamina is used by Pokemon to perform Moves in battle.

Trainer Level Min/Max: Each player’s Trainer Level will play a role in battles.

CP (Combat Points)
"Levels" in Pokemon GO have been replaced with 'CP (Combat Points)' - which is a general 'Power' metric. The higher the CP the more powerful the Pokemon. Wild Pokemon of the same species have been sighted with different CP levels.

Based on the information gathered from the Beta Test so far, there will be a great degree of Pokemon uniqueness within Pokemon Go. Two Pokemon of the same species (Eg. Two Charmanders) could have different Stats (Attack, Defense, Stamina), Natures and CP.

These varying factors greatly limit the chance of two Pokemon being exactly the same.

Catching Pokemon
Capturing Pokemon is the heart and soul of all Pokemon games. Just as in previous games, you will be able to travel the world and capture Pokemon. However, in the Pokemon Go Closed Beta Test, battling wild Pokemon was not an option to Testers.

Therefore, it is very unlikely that battling Wild Pokemon will be an option in Pokemon Go. Here is some more information we learned from the Closed Beta about capturing Pokemon:

- In the closed Beta field test, users did not get a starter Pokemon. Based on this information, it looks like the first Pokemon you catch will be your “Starter”. I kind of like this as it gives a more “Real Life” feel to the game.

Each Trainer will start out with a weak Pokemon close to his/her location. He or she will then have to travel the world to capture and Train more Pokemon with the goal of creating the most powerful Pokemon team possible.

- Users will travel within the real world looking for Pokemon to show up on their map.

- When encountering a Pokemon, you can throw Pokeballs by flicking your finger across the screen of your smartphone.

- Poor Pokeball throws may result in a failed capture.

- Pokemon can break free from Pokeballs.

- After too many failed attempts, Wild Pokemon can flee from an encounter.

- Users can access inventory to switch between Pokeballs during the encounter.

- Higher tier Pokeballs will offer a higher probability of capture.

- Wild Pokemon will have a certain amount of CP. The higher the CP the more difficult a Pokemon will be to capture. It has been suggested that CP stands for “Combat Points”.

- Trainer’s can throw Pokeballs in different ways to increase gained EXP and improve the probability of capture.

- Users can switch between Augmented Reality Mode and Normal Mode.

- Berries can be used during encounters. It has been suggested that Berries may improve the capture rate of wild Pokemon.

- Wild Pokemon have the ability to “Attack” during encounters. It has been suggested that Wild Pokemon attacks may reduce a Trainer’s energy. If a Trainer’s energy gets too low the capture attempt will fail and/or the Pokemon will flee.

- There has been no information to suggest that a Trainer or a Trainer’s Pokemon can attack a wild Pokemon back.

- Players will get a bonus for capturing his or her first Pokemon of the day. The achievement is “First Catch of the Day”

- Players will be able to hold up to 500 Pokemon in their inventory at Trainer Level 50.

- The option to release Pokemon is available.

Pokemon Evolution
Evolving Pokemon is an available option to players in Pokemon Go. Here is some more Closed Beta Information about evolving Pokemon:

- Pokemon Evolutions occur through Crystals/Evolution Stones.

- Every time you capture a Wild Pokemon, a shard of an evolution crystal will be credited to your account.

- These shards will be collected and tracked automatically.

- Once enough shards are collected the crystal will be filled, and you will gain the opportunity to evolve that particular species of Pokemon.

- Once evolved, the species’ crystal counter will then reset to One Shard for the beginning evolution and add One Shard for the Evolved.

- Each Pokemon species will have their own distinct shard count.

- Two Stage Pokemon need twenty Shards to evolve (Eg. Collect 20 Rattata Shards to evolve into 1 Raticate).

- Three Stage Pokemon need ten Shards to evolve (Eg. Collect 10 Bulbasaur Shards to evolve into 1 Ivysaur. 10 Ivysaur Shards needed to evolve into 1 Venusaur).

- Fortunately second level evolutions can be encountered in the wild. (Eg. Capture 10 Ivysaurs to evolve into 1 Venusaur rather than having to capture 100 Bulbasaurs).

- Specific Pokemon may have different shard requirements. (Example: Magikarp requires 100 shards to evolve into Gyarados).

- Pokemon can be released once caught. The good news is you get keep the shard even if that Pokemon is released.

- CP is a measure of a Pokemon’s power. When Pokemon are evolved they will see a significant increase in CP. Beta Testers have witnessed a 300+ CP increase for a second stage evolution.

- Final stage evolutions will be much more powerful than their first stage.

Trainer Profiles, Capturing Gameplay & Crystals

The first bit of Pokemon Go Alpha gameplay has been leaked from Niantic's SXSW Gaming Panel. This video begins with John Hanke confirming the following:

"They are distributed all around the world, Pokemon have different habitats. Some like water, some like mountains, there are a lot of places they like to live so you will have to go to quite a variety of places to catch them all"

Check out the Leaked Gameplay Footage below:

In addition to Hanke's comment, we have learned some more information about Pokemon Go's gameplay and mechanics.

Player Profiles: From the footage shown, every player will have a profile and his or her own avatar. The on screen information will include Trainer Level, username and appearance (which looks to be customizable). Trainers can gain experience points through capturing Pokemon and actually level up themselves.

Capturing Pokemon: The footage showed a player attempting to capture a wild Ivysaur, however no battle preceded the capture attempt. It remains to be seen if battling wild Pokemon will be even be possible in Pokemon Go.

With a swipe of a finger, the user attempted to manually capture Ivysaur by throwing Poke Balls its way. The throw attempt Missed the first time and the Pokemon broke free on the second throw attempt.

The user then switched to using a Master Ball and caught the Ivysaur. The player gained 110 XP for the capture (100 XP for a successful capture and 10 XP for a "nice throw")

Note: Before the capture attempt there were three Ivysaur icons in the bottom right of the screen. This could possibly mean that the Trainer has three attempts to capture the Pokemon before it runs away.

Poke Balls: All four Pokeballs were shown in the user's Items window, each providing a greater chance to capture Pokemon.

Poke Ball - A device used for capturing wild Pokemon
Great Ball- A good high-performance Poke Ball
Ultra Ball- An ultra-high performance Poke Ball
Master Ball- The best chance of capturing a Pokemon.

CP: In the video, Ivysaur had the following labeled above its head "CP 535". CP stands for Combat Points. The higher the CP the more powerful the Pokemon. Pokemon with greater CP are more difficult to catch.

Crystals: Used for evolutions. Collect enough evolution shards to fill up your Pokemon's crystal.

This footage is still from the Alpha stage, but I do like what I have seen so far. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
