Training

How to Train at an Enemy/Neutral Gym
In order to Train at a Gym that is owned by another Team, you must first defeat that Gym until has Prestige. Once a Gym loses all Prestige it will become Neutral. To capture the Gym, simply deploy one of your Pokémon to Defend the Gym. The Gym will then change into the color of your Team.
How to Train at a Friendly Gym
Once a Gym is captured by your Team, visit the Gym and choose your best Pokémon to use in battle. Using Moves and Dodge the goal is to deal damage to the defending Pokémon to reduce its HP to zero.
After successfully winning the Training battle, you will earn Trainer XP and Prestige for your Team's Gym. The more Training a Team does at a particular Gym, the faster that Gym will Level Up. Higher Level Gyms are generally more difficult for opposing Teams to capture.
Training Tips
- Train against defending Pokémon with lower CP to maximize total XP and Prestige Gains.
- Use Moves that are Super Effective against the Type of Pokémon you are battling against.
- Team Up with players and Train at the same time in order to speed up the rate of Prestige Gain.
Team

If you have not yet picked a Team, simply visit a Gym. Upon interacting with the Gym, the option to join a Team will become available to you.
Quick Tip: If playing with friends or a group of friends try to all join the same Team so you can battle against other Teams together.
A controlled Gym will be the color of the Team that owns it. For example, if you see a Yellow Gym marker on the map, it is owned by the Yellow Team. Neutral (unowned) Gyms will be the color Gray.
Gyms that have one of the other two Team colors are 'Enemy Gyms'.
Attacking Enemy Gyms
Players can choose to Battle at Enemy Gyms solo or with other members of their Team. The goal is to reduce the Prestige of Enemy Gyms by defeating the defending Pokémon at these Gyms. When enough Prestige is lost by a Gym it will become Neutral. At this point, any player can capture this Gym for their Team.
Defending/Training at Friendly Gyms
Players will want to place Pokémon at Friendly Gyms to help defend against opposing Teams. The higher Level a Gym, the more defending Pokémon slots it will have. Trainers can battle friendly Pokémon at Gyms (also known as Training) to help gain Prestige for their Gym. Working together as a Team, players will want to try and build the greatest Pokémon defense possible to protect and hold Gyms.

Revive

Trainers that have been defeated in Gym battles will usually see the HP of their fallen Pokemon completely depleted. These Pokémon need to be Revived and restored back to full HP before battling again.
Tip: Pick your battles wisely or switch out your Pokemon to avoid having to Revive them. Standard Potions are cheaper and more common than Max Revives!
Prestige
While Experience Points (XP) are required to Level Up Trainers, Prestige is needed to Level Up Gyms.
Prestige can be earned by defeating Pokémon in battle at friendly Gyms (also known as Training).
When a Gym gains enough Prestige it will Level Up and gain an additional defensive Pokémon slot. Teams will want to work together and Train at Gyms to earn Prestige quickly in order to build up Gym defenses.

Winning a Training battle will increase a Gym's Prestige by 50 points.
Prestige Required for Gym Level Ups
Level 1 Gyms increase to Level 2 Gyms at 500 Prestige points.
Level 2 Gyms increase to Level 3 Gyms at 1,000 prestige points.
Level 3 Gyms increase to Level 4 Gyms at 2,000 Prestige points.
Potion
A Potion is Type of Item in Pokémon Go used to replenish the HP of an injured Pokémon. Potions can heal small amount of a Pokémon's HP or restore it fully. The effectiveness of this healing effect is determined by the type of Potion used.
Note: When a Pokémon battles it may lose HP. Weakened Pokémon need to be healed before fighting again.
Potions can be obtained for free by visiting Pokéstops.
The following is a list of the Potions that can be obtained in Pokémon Go.

Super Effective

When a Move is used on a Pokémon in battle, it may deal normal damage, increased damage (Super Effective) or less damage (Not Very Effective). This is determined by the Type of Move used and the Type of Pokémon the Move is used on, also known as Type Effectiveness.
Certain Pokémon Types are more vulnerable to specific Types of damage. For example, Squirtle is in a battle with Charmander. It decides to use Water Gun, which happens to be a Water Type Move. Being that Charmander is a Fire Type Pokémon it is weak against Water and therefore it will take extra damage from the attack.
If a Pokémon Type is weak against a Move, "Super Effective" will appear on the screen after the attack lands.
Not Very Effective

Not Very Effective refers to a Move that deals less than normal damage to a Pokémon.
When a Move is used on a Pokémon in battle, it may deal normal damage, less damage (Not Very Effective) or increased damage (Super Effective). This is determined by the Type of Move used and the Type of Pokémon the Move is used on, also known as Type Effectiveness.
Certain Pokémon Types are more resistant to certain Types of damage. For example, Charmander is in battle against a Squirtle. It decides to use the Move Ember, which happens to be a Fire Type Move. Being that Squirtle is a Water Type Pokémon it is strong against Fire and therefore it will take reduced damage from the attack.
If a Pokémon Type is resistant to a Move, "Not Very Effective" will appear on the screen after the attack lands.

Level Up

How to Level Up
Gaining enough XP will automatically result in a Level increase. That Level will be shown next to the Trainer's profile picture at the bottom of the screen.
In the early stages of the game (Levels 1 - 5) Leveling Up does not require much XP. However, as you progress through the later stages of the game, Leveling Up will progressively require more XP.
To Level Up quickly, focus on gaining experience points efficiently while reducing idle time such as traveling, checking inventory, Pokémon, Pokédex, etc.).
Being that bonus XP is awarded for capturing new Pokémon, be sure to keep track of which Pokémon you have captured and which ones you still need. The new capture bonus also works for hatching Eggs and Evolving Pokémon.

Level Up Item Rewards
Leveling Up not only enables players to capture better Pokémon, each Level Up may also result in Item rewards (depending on the specific level reached).
For example, reaching a certain level may reward a player with Great Balls, Ultra Balls or even a Master Ball! Keep leveling up to earn those free rewards.
Benefits for High Level Players
- Ultimately, higher level players will have stronger teams of Pokémon, and subsequently perform better when Battling at Gyms.
- Higher Level players will have better Pokémon that will be able to defend friendly Gyms for longer periods of time.
- Pokémon with higher CP levels can be found more often in the wild.
The following chart shows the XP requirements and rewards for each Level your Trainer gains:
