Training

Training in Pokémon Go refers to the act of Battling one's Pokémon at a friendly Gym. The defending Pokémon will be owned by either the person Training or by a Teammate. The purpose of Training is to win the battle in order to earn XP for your Trainer and Prestige for your Gym.

How to Train at an Enemy/Neutral Gym
In order to Train at a Gym that is owned by another Team, you must first defeat that Gym until has Prestige. Once a Gym loses all Prestige it will become Neutral. To capture the Gym, simply deploy one of your Pokémon to Defend the Gym. The Gym will then change into the color of your Team.

How to Train at a Friendly Gym
Once a Gym is captured by your Team, visit the Gym and choose your best Pokémon to use in battle. Using Moves and Dodge the goal is to deal damage to the defending Pokémon to reduce its HP to zero.

After successfully winning the Training battle, you will earn Trainer XP and Prestige for your Team's Gym. The more Training a Team does at a particular Gym, the faster that Gym will Level Up. Higher Level Gyms are generally more difficult for opposing Teams to capture.

Training Tips
- Train against defending Pokémon with lower CP to maximize total XP and Prestige Gains.
- Use Moves that are Super Effective against the Type of Pokémon you are battling against.
- Team Up with players and Train at the same time in order to speed up the rate of Prestige Gain.

Team

Players can choose to join one of three different Teams in Pokémon Go. The options are Team Mystic (Blue), Team Valor (Red) or Team Instinct (Yellow). Players of the same Team will need to work together in order to capture and defend Gyms.

If you have not yet picked a Team, simply visit a Gym. Upon interacting with the Gym, the option to join a Team will become available to you.

Quick Tip: If playing with friends or a group of friends try to all join the same Team so you can battle against other Teams together.

A controlled Gym will be the color of the Team that owns it. For example, if you see a Yellow Gym marker on the map, it is owned by the Yellow Team. Neutral (unowned) Gyms will be the color Gray.

Gyms that share the same color as your Team are 'Friendly Gyms'.

Gyms that have one of the other two Team colors are 'Enemy Gyms'.

Attacking Enemy Gyms
Players can choose to Battle at Enemy Gyms solo or with other members of their Team. The goal is to reduce the Prestige of Enemy Gyms by defeating the defending Pokémon at these Gyms. When enough Prestige is lost by a Gym it will become Neutral. At this point, any player can capture this Gym for their Team.

Defending/Training at Friendly Gyms
Players will want to place Pokémon at Friendly Gyms to help defend against opposing Teams. The higher Level a Gym, the more defending Pokémon slots it will have. Trainers can battle friendly Pokémon at Gyms (also known as Training) to help gain Prestige for their Gym. Working together as a Team, players will want to try and build the greatest Pokémon defense possible to protect and hold Gyms.

Revive

Revive is the act of restoring a Pokémon whom has lost all HP. When a Pokémon Faints it will need to be Revived. While Potions cannot be used to restore the HP of Fainted Pokémon, Max Revives can.

Trainers that have been defeated in Gym battles will usually see the HP of their fallen Pokemon completely depleted. These Pokémon need to be Revived and restored back to full HP before battling again.

Tip: Pick your battles wisely or switch out your Pokemon to avoid having to Revive them. Standard Potions are cheaper and more common than Max Revives!

Prestige

While Experience Points (XP) are required to Level Up Trainers, Prestige is needed to Level Up Gyms.

Prestige can be earned by defeating Pokémon in battle at friendly Gyms (also known as Training).

When a Gym gains enough Prestige it will Level Up and gain an additional defensive Pokémon slot. Teams will want to work together and Train at Gyms to earn Prestige quickly in order to build up Gym defenses.

Winning a Training battle will increase a Gym's Prestige by 50 points.

Prestige Required for Gym Level Ups
Level 1 Gyms increase to Level 2 Gyms at 500 Prestige points.
Level 2 Gyms increase to Level 3 Gyms at 1,000 prestige points.
Level 3 Gyms increase to Level 4 Gyms at 2,000 Prestige points.

Level Up

In Pokémon Go, Trainers have the ability to gain Experience Points (XP) and Level Up. When a Trainer Levels Up he or she will become stronger. The higher the Trainer Level of a player, the easier it becomes capturing high CP Pokémon.

How to Level Up
Gaining enough XP will automatically result in a Level increase. That Level will be shown next to the Trainer's profile picture at the bottom of the screen.

In the early stages of the game (Levels 1 - 5) Leveling Up does not require much XP. However, as you progress through the later stages of the game, Leveling Up will progressively require more XP.

To Level Up quickly, focus on gaining experience points efficiently while reducing idle time such as traveling, checking inventory, Pokémon, Pokédex, etc.).

Being that bonus XP is awarded for capturing new Pokémon, be sure to keep track of which Pokémon you have captured and which ones you still need. The new capture bonus also works for hatching Eggs and Evolving Pokémon.

Level Up Item Rewards
Leveling Up not only enables players to capture better Pokémon, each Level Up may also result in Item rewards (depending on the specific level reached).

For example, reaching a certain level may reward a player with Great Balls, Ultra Balls or even a Master Ball! Keep leveling up to earn those free rewards.

Benefits for High Level Players
- Ultimately, higher level players will have stronger teams of Pokémon, and subsequently perform better when Battling at Gyms.

- Higher Level players will have better Pokémon that will be able to defend friendly Gyms for longer periods of time.

- Pokémon with higher CP levels can be found more often in the wild.

The following chart shows the XP requirements and rewards for each Level your Trainer gains:

Hit Points (HP)

HP stands for Hit Points/Health Points and represents the maximum amount of damage a Pokémon can take in battle before fainting. During Gym battles the HP of both the attacking and defending Pokémon is shown in the form of a Health Bar. This is shown above the Stamina (Energy) bar.

Pokémon of the same species may have different amount of HP. For example, a player may have one Pikachu with 33 HP and another with 35 HP. Health Points are important, as Pokémon with higher levels of HP and CP will statistically perform better while attacking or defending at Gyms.

As long as a Pokémon has not fainted, its HP can be replenished by using Potions. Potions are items that can be found at Pokéstops and restores HP with the amount dependent on the type of Potion used.

Faint

A Pokémon will Faint when its HP is reduced to zero. Fainting usually occurs in battles, when a Pokémon takes too much damage from its opponent's Moves. To avoid taking damage, players can attempt to Dodge attacks.

A Fainted Pokémon cannot battle, nor have its HP replenished by Potions. Before becoming eligible to battle again, a Pokémon must first be Revived and then restored back to full health. Max Revives can be used to Revive Pokémon and restore them back to full HP. These can be found at Pokéstops.

Note: If a defending Pokémon is defeated at a Gym a certain number of times it will faint and automatically be sent back to its owner.

Experience Points (XP)

An Experience Point (often abbreviated as EXP or XP) is a unit which measures a Trainer's progression in Pokémon Go. Experience Points are gained by completing actions and achieving certain goals. When enough XP is gained by a player, he or she will Level Up, advancing to the next level of progression.

Why Should you gain XP?
Gaining XP is necessary for increasing your Trainer Level. Players with a higher Trainer Level will be able to capture more powerful Pokémon. Most players seek to gain XP as quickly as possible, with the main goal of Leveling Up Fast.

Where Can you Gain XP?
There are a variety of ways to earn Experience Points in Pokémon Go. Some of the best ways to earn XP include Capturing Pokémon, Winning Battles at Gyms, Visiting Pokéstops, Hatching Eggs and Evolving Pokémon.

Note: You will also gain bonus XP for certain achievements such as Capturing a New Pokémon.
